Class war is a staple of an Ethel Merman musical.
Disposable love interests are another. Poor Nick Bullet, the
aristocrat, appears once on the song list in a duet with Hattie titled “MyMother Would Love You.” The featured duet in a Merman musical was a
friendship duet. Here it’s “Let’s Be Buddies” where Merman wins over Nick’s
spoiled daughter.
The stakes are briefly raised with a terrorist attack (!?)
but no mad bomber stands a chance against Ethel.
